French Toast Grilled Cheese Recipe

French Toast Grilled Cheese Recipe

Nadiya’s savoury take on French toast is a great option for a pleasant lunch. It’s loaded with cheese, ham, and a hint of spice. As seen on BBC’s Time to Eat.

Introduction

A good way to enjoy bread is to dip it in egg and fry it. This is different than its sweet counterparts. French toast can be served as a lunch alternative to or even in place of breakfast. These are great to have in the freezer for those times when you don’t have time or energy to prepare lunch. To reheat them, you can simply put them in the oven while you are working on other things.

Ingredients

6eggs
100mlwhole milk
½ tspsalt
2 tspsugar
¼ tspground turmeric
1 tspgarlic granules
1 tsponion granules
6 slicesof sliced white bread
3 slicesof cooked ham / turkey / vegetarian ham slices
3 slicesof mild cheese

vegetable oil, for frying

Method

Put the eggs into a shallow bowl, wide enough to take a slice of bread, and add the milk, salt, sugar, turmeric, garlic granules and onion granules. Mix well and leave to sit for 5 minutes, allowing the granules to rehydrate in the egg mix.

Sandwich the bread slices with the cheese and ham. Place them in the egg mixture, and then place them on a plate.

Place a nonstick frying pan on the stovetop with a thin coating of oil. Dip one sandwich in the egg mixture, then fry it on medium heat for 3 minutes until golden brown and the cheese has melted. Then turn the sandwich over and cook for 3 more minutes. Use a spatula lightly to seal the bread. Once they are done, divide them in half.

You can add more oil to the bottom of the pan, and continue with the sandwiches, dipping them and frying the same. Depending on how absorbent your bread is, you might have enough eggy mixture left over to make another sandwich.

Serve hot, with a dollop of ketchup if you like.

These are best eaten fresh, but if there are any left over you can wrap them in foil and freeze them.
